A COMPANY OVERVIEW
CSAI - Centro Servizi Ambiente Impianti is a public-private joint stock company, managing two landfills for municipal solid waste and non-hazardous waste in South Tuscany, one in municipality of Terranuova Bracciolini, called "Casa Rota" and the other in the municipality of Castiglione Fibocchi, called "Il Pero".
The two landfills are equipped with biogas recovery system with electricity production: in "Casa Rota" working 4 engines for a total of 2.8 MWh. The corresponding annual energy production would meet the needs of approximately 1000 apartments (considering an average family consisting of 3 persons). We are testing two additional engines which will carry the potential to 4.6 MWh, while landfill "Il Pero" is equipped with a single engine of 600 kW.
CSAI operates in full awareness of the role of manager of essential public services, pledging to protect the rights of personality and human dignity, health, labor, safety, the environment, in accordance with the principles and ethical values that inform models of business conduct. In order to promote the observance of those principles and values, the Company has decided to adopt and publish a code of conduct.
A campaign of monitoring of odors is implemented as a service in order to collect a series of data to be used as a useful basis for studies and for a continuous improvement of critical issues related to the presence or absence of odor. The data are processed and transformed into graphs showing the situation every two weeks through three variables: the place of discovery, day, and the intensity.
CSAI as the role of operator in the field of environmental hygiene, to guarantee the quality of its activities and its commitment to the environment has decided to undertake the certification process of its management system with respect to internationally accepted standards:
• The UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 specifies requirements for a Quality Management System (QMS)
• The UNI EN ISO 14001:2004 specifies requirements for an Environmental Management System (EMS)
The preparation of an Environmental Management System (EMS) to comply with the requirements of ISO 14001 has allowed obtaining EMAS registration (No. 000812-IT of 12.4.2008) for both plants.
